NRCS Local Working Group Meeting

Picture
Date: April 21
Time: 9:00 am-12:00 pm
Location: 254 Goddard Road, Lewiston, ME 04240
Fee: Free!

We are asking all landowners, woodlot owners, and farmers across Androscoggin & Sagadahoc counties, and especially those who are interested or already enrolled in NRCS programs to join us for a meeting to participate in deciding how money is distributed throughout the two counties. We want your input! This affects how applications can rank and sets local priorities for conservation funding.

This meeting is open to the public.  We will discuss USDA NRCS programs and make decisions on where to prioritize funding for the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) in Androscoggin and Sagadahoc Counties.  This is a great time to learn about new NRCS cost-share programs and meet other local residents who want to protect natural resources in Androscoggin & Sagadahoc Counties.  Food and drink provided by the Androscoggin Valley Soil & Water Conservation District.

Registration is requested.  To register call 207-241-5374, email [email protected] or contact NRCS staff.

Vernal Pool Exploration

Picture
Date: April 21
Time: 7:00 pm-8:30 pm
Location: Lilly Pond Community Forest, 150 High Street, Bath, ME 04530
Fee: Free! Register Here

A vernal pool is a seasonal, fish-free pool of water that provides valuable habitat for a variety of plants and wildlife. Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District staff and Tyler Pascocello from the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust will lead participants in exploring Lilly Pond Community Forest, sharing information about vernal pools' ecological significance and how to identify different critters that live in these special habitats. Come ready to hike off trail and listen for chorusing amphibians calling for their springtime sweethearts!

This is a light rain or shine event and the workshop content is targeted for all ages, adults and children are welcome.

This event is free and open to the public! This program will be after dark to try to take advantage of peak amphibian activity, so a headlamp/flashlight is recommended.

Apple Grafting Workshop

Picture
Date: May 2
Time: 9:30 am-12:30 pm
Location: Topsham Public Library, 25 Foreside Road, Topsham, ME 04086
Fee: $65 Register Here

Why is it necessary to graft fruit trees? Why did we start grafting trees? Learn this and more at this workshop! Get hands-on experience with grafting from MOFGA's C.J. Walke. Participants will get a chance to practice grafting techniques and then graft two apple trees to take home and plant on their own property!

Note: If you need eyeglasses for up close work, please bring them. Lining up the grafts correctly is crucial to a successful union.

Basic & Advanced Erosion Control Training

Picture
Date: May 28
Time: 8:00 am-4:00 pm
Location: 254 Goddard Road, Lewiston, ME 04240
Fee: $80 Register Here

In this 8-hour course, participants will learn:
  • Why erosion control practices are important
  • Principles of erosion and sedimentation
  • How to properly install and maintain Erosion & Sedimentation Control ('ECS') Best Management Practices (BMPs)
  • Regulations requiring ESC, using the Departments Permit By Rule process
  • In-water work procedures
  • ESC planning

Participants are provided with information on the proper selection, installation and maintenance of ESC practices using Maine DEPs Erosion and Sediment Control Practices Field Guide for Contractors.

This course is necessary to become a Contractor Certified in Erosion and Sedimentation Control Practices by the Department. The course is of primary interest to contractors but could also be helpful to municipal code enforcement officers, consultants, engineers, and public works employees.
